Feel Good Friday

It’s Feel Good Friday! Here’s an incredibly motivational video on a disabled veteran’s transformation from obese and assisted-walking to.. well you’ll see!

Never underestimate what you can accomplish when you believe in yourself. Never give up. Thanks MB for the share.

I can’t wait for Yoga on the Mall tomorrow! Happy DC Yoga week!

RUN.

I love running commercials. Love them.

Here are the latest from Adidas and Nike.

Run for love, run for fitness. Just run.

Hains Point

My little secret place to run that’s not so much a secret? Hains Point. It’s most loved by golfers (East Potomac Golf Course) and cyclists who frequently use the 5k loop (pictured below) to train.

Even though several local races, including the Veterans Day 10k and the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler Run, are located here, runners don’t quite use this area as much as their biker counterparts. Here are the reasons I LOVE running here:

  • Ample and FREE parking (parking lot of the golf course and several spaces along the 5k route)
  • Access to bathrooms (golf course bathrooms and 2 public (and clean, for the most part) bathrooms along the route)
  • Fantastic views of the Potomac River, Ft. Lesley J. McNair, Reagan National Airport, and the Washington Monument.
  • The entire 5k route is lined with Cherry Blossom trees. When in bloom, there is nothing more beautiful!
  • Close proximity to the Tidal Basin/Jefferson Memorial/MLK Jr. Memorial, Rock Creek Pkwy Trails, Memorial Bridge, Mt. Vernon Trail, and Lincoln Memorial.
The ONLY con: The 5k route is not cut off to cars and during peak season (aka right now) several tour buses will drive through. Having said that, motorists are fully aware that the 5k loop is frequented by cyclists and runners and are, for the most part, very respectful to non-motorists. Everyone must share the road!

Here are some photos I’ve snapped during a few runs:

It’s officially running season. Go go go!

[WWND] Mamma Chia

I wrote last year about the benefits of chia seeds (Chia, the new flax?), and I’ve now had a little bit of time to explore it’s consumption and products. My findings? Mamma Chia!

It’s certified USDA Organic and boasts gluten-free, vegan, 4g protein, 2500mg Omega-3, and 95mg calcium while also being high in fiber and antioxidants (thanks almost entirely to chia). If you don’t have the time to blend up your own drinks with chia, I recommend trying this drink out. Where to Buy: Whole Foods, Mom’s Organic Market, and Yes! Organic Market are probably your best bet for DC metro area locals.

Visit their website to learn more about their products, mission, or even apply to become a brand ambassador! MammaChia.com

Achieving the Elusive Runner’s High

Yesterday’s high temps of 74 degrees begged runners and cyclists to come out and enjoy the trails. I had no intentions of objecting and nothing was going to stop me from getting on the road. Even PV ran a little!

Here was my route:

The map (via gmap-pedometer) shows it at 8 miles, but I ran with my Garmin which calculated the mileage at 7.53mi.

Minor digression: I’m not sure why there’s such a large discrepancy between the two, but hopefully I can figure out which is the most accurate soon. Although I can probably run 8 miles in under 72 minutes, it’s not likely that I did it last night.

Anyway, the route took me past Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Jefferson, and MLK Jr. DC is probably one of the best cities to run in; there are so many beautiful bridges, paths, memorials, and landmarks to look at and it’s especially nice when the Potomac doesn’t appear to be brown. It gave me the ultimate runner’s high last night; I could have run forever if only the sun had stayed with me. Alas, I ended it at 6:30pm and snapped this photo of the Lincoln Memorial. Beautiful, but still does not do it justice.

I will miss.

Bike DC 2012

The official details for this year’s Bike DC event have been released. See below for some links and info:

Description:

On one Sunday morning each year there is the special opportunity to explore and enjoy Washington and Arlington from the best possible vantage point–the seat of a bicycle.

From the Capitol and White House to Arlington Cemetery and the Air Force Memorial, from Pennsylvania Avenue to the George Washington Parkway, Bike DC is a non-competitive bike ride through the heart of our community and the heart of the nation.

Date: Sunday, May 13, 2012.

Registration: Mail-in Form (PDF) or Online Submission

Fees:  Adults Full Ride –  $40 ($50 on the day of the event)

Full Ride Route: 24 miles (PDF) This year they have access to Rock Creek Parkway which I think is a beautiful and easy trail.

Links: Website (www.BikeDC.net), Facebook (/BikeDC), Twitter (@Bike_DC)

This is a great opportunity you DO NOT want to miss. Very rarely do DC roads and local highways get shutdown for bikers. I participated in 2010 and loved it!
